Susanna Brown is the ceramic artist behind many a really useful pot in Australia. From her inspirational orchard studio set in the hillside of Flaxman’s Valley, South Australia, Susanna creates pottery which belongs anywhere but a dusty shelf. These stunning hand made designs are with us to be touched, used and above all loved.
The enjoyment Susanna draws from throwing on the wheel and the satisfying magic of making a beautiful shape from a lump clay is evident in the final pieces Susanna presents.
Now a resident of the Barossa Valley for the past 33 years, Susanna lives on a farm which primarily concentrates on sheep wool and meat. Her studio has been transformed from a fruit packing and sheep crutching shed into a highly inspirational space. Her view out over her beautiful garden in Flaxman’s Valley at any time and in any weather is pure heaven!
Susanna’s interest is foremost in creating really classical pottery that is really useful but incredibly good looking. For Susanna, form is the most important part of creating a beautiful piece, closely followed by functionality and quality. Often in her studio, it is the mistakes she makes when making new pots that create new shapes which capture her imagination.
Susanna’s words on pottery:
Be true to yourself in everything you do. You know yourself whether the pot is good or not. The look of joy on people’s faces as they hold the mug that you have made is everything.
